To understand what speaking in tongues is in the bible we must first understand what “tongues” mean in the bible. When the word tongues is used in the bible it can mean either two things.
- It either means the physical tongue in the mouth. Example: James 3:5, Acts 2:26
- Or it means languages. The greek word “glossa” means tongue or language.
Glossology-department of anthropology which has to do with the study of languages and dialects. The greek word “dialektos” means speech or language and is where we get the english word dialect. dialektos: speech, language. Original Word: διάλεκτος, ου, ἡ
“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;”
“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;”
LANGUAGE: The method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way.
: any one of the systems of human language that are used and understood by a particular group of people
: words of a particular kind
Keep in mind the 3 definitions of language. Spoken or written communication, used and understood and words of a particular kind.
1 Corinthians 14:27
“If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.”
According to the bible if any man speak in an unknown tongue it has to be two or at the most three and one must interpret. Knowing tongue means language its obvious 1 Corinthians 14:27 means if any man speak in an unknown language they need an interpreter.
Needing an interpreter makes perfect sense cause what good would it do if no one can understand whats being said? The whole point of tongues was to communicate the gospel. No message is able to be conveyed by the unknown tongues practiced in the charismatic/Pentecostal movement today. Not even the person babbling.
Bible says “let it be by two, or at the most by three”. Yet you go into a Pentecostal church now days and way more than three people are speaking in “unknown tongues” with no order and no interpreter. The charismatic definition of unknown tongue is no one can understand it but God. But unknown tongue in the bible is simply is a language that they didn’t know before. It really is that simple. Theres absolutely no way of justifying the unknown tongues of today without twisting scripture. 1 Corinthians 14:27 says plainly: you need an interpreter, it needs to be in order and at the most three at a time.
“28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.”
The greek word for speak is “laleo” and means “I speak”. The word is never used to describe noise or random sound. It deals directly with speaking words. Real words.
1 Corinthians 14:9 says to speak with words easy to be understood…this does not fit the Pentecostal/charismatic definition.
1 Corinthians 14:9
“So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.”
Everywhere in the bible where it says unknown tongue “unknown” its in italicized letters. This is because “unknown” is not found in greek manuscript but was inserted by the translators to help the reader understand. God did not direct Paul to write “unknown” tongues so we have NO reason to believe unknown tongues meant anything other than different languages that they didn’t know before.
There is absolutely no scriptural evidence to prove that an unknown tongue is a heavenly tongue/language of the angels.
Every time an angel appeared to a man in the bible the angel communicated in the human language that the man spoke. The one spoken to always understood it.
If an unknown tongue its a language of angels or a heavenly language then Satan would be able to understand it since he was once a cherub in heaven. This completely contradicts the claim that no one, not even Satan himself can understand it.
There are those that claim they see tongues as proof of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Does the bible ever say that though? No! The Bible says that we receive the Holy Spirit when we accept Jesus as our Saviour. Your proof of the holy spirit comes the second you believe. Jesus NEVER commanded us to speak in tongues or unknown tongues.
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
The definition of unknown tongues (given by the charismatic/Pentecostal movement) is a language that no one can understand but God. The best way to describe the language and how it sounds is random blabbering. The people doing it admit they don’t even know what they are saying but claim only God does. If you aren’t familiar with what Im talking about by describing it as babbling then the video below will make it clear. And I don’t call it babbling out of disrespect so please don’t take it that way. Babbling is just the best way to describe the sound to someone who has never heard it. And because babbling is not a real language. For example. If I start making baby nosies that no one can understand you wouldn’t classify those nosies as a language. Those who speak in tongues will say “Its a language because God understands it” but have absolutely no scripture to support that argument. Nothing in the bible describes speaking in tongues as random noise that only God understands.
verb. gerund or present participle: babbling
- To talk rapidly and continuously in a foolish, excited, or incomprehensible way.
- to utter something rapidly and incoherently.
- reveal something secret or confidential by talking impulsively or carelessly.
The definition of babble fits the video and everyone that speaks in tongues today!
The bible speaks about babbling….
2 Timothy 2:16
“But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.”
1 Timothy 6:20
“O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:”
“Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.”
“Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.”
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
PLEASE CONSIDER THIS AFTER WATCHING THE VIDEO BELOW. The only time anyone ever fell on their back by being in the presence of the holy spirit or Jesus was when the guards and Judas came to arrest Jesus. EVERYONE ELSE FELL ON THEIR FACE AND WORSHIPPED HIM AT HIS FEET! Why did the holy spirit just start making people fall on their backs? Did the holy spirit just start making everyone fall on their backs in 1906 at the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles of all places? Defiantly something to consider since theres no biblical evidence for people falling backwards while filled with the holy spirit or in the presence of the holy spirit.
The definition of “unknown tongues” given by the charismatic movement does not match up biblically for many reasons. The most obvious reason is because babbling is not a system of words, its not understood, and its not words of a particular kind. Its just random noises that over time the people doing it become familiarized with it and develop their own pattern of noises.
SPEAKING IN TONGUES
DO PEOPLE STILL HAVE THE GIFT OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES TODAY?
1 Corinthians 13:8-10
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
The bible says “tongues, they shall cease;” This is not a twist in scripture to believe the gift of tongues has ceased because the bible literally says the words “tongues, they shall cease;”. Although to interpret the scripture any other way then what it literately says is twisting scripture to fit your beliefs. “YOUR beliefs” not what the bible says.
WHEN DID THEY CEASE? CONTINUE TO VERSE 10
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
Does this mean the coming of Christ? Was the gift of tongues to continue until Jesus comes? No! That which is perfect cannot mean Jesus because it is in the “neuter” case (Not male. Not female) in the original Greek of Paul’s writings. It means the perfect thing, not the perfect person. What is the perfect thing? The fully revealed New Testament.
God was giving those special gifts (tongues, prophecies, healings. etc.) to reveal his truth, guide the church and spread the Gospel until he could completely reveal all and close his revelation to man. (Read carefully Hebrews 2.3-4: Ephesians 4.8-15: 1 Corinthians 13.8-13.)
“Then the church would not be in a state of childhood and immaturity of miracles (1 Cor. 13.11-12) and dependence on wonders and signs that could be easily imitated by Satan. (2 Cor. 11.14.) But the church would be guided by the complete written will of God that all men could have to read and understand. Paul said the gifts were to last until the source of all unity could be fully revealed (Ephesians 4.11-15) and then they would cease. (1 Cor. 13.8.) To continue in a state of childhood would not be good for the church, yet to depend on such signs as tongues is what Paul said is childhood. Should we return to that state of childhood? James 1.25 says we have the perfect law of liberty in the Gospel.”———http://www.churches-of-christ.net/tracts/job107u.htm
1 Corinthians 13:8-9
“Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.”
Seek after the more precious gifts!
1 Corinthians 12:29-31
“Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.”
All the sign gifts ceased because there was no further need for them. The Jews as a nation rejected Jesus Christ as their Messiah so they also rejected the sign gifts proving Jesus’ deity and Messiahship. The bible says in 1 Corinthians 1:22 and all throughout the bible that signs are for jews. The gospel was taken to the gentiles after the jews rejected their messiah. Gentiles do not seek after signs. Yes of course gentiles in the bible spoke in tongues but it was a sign to the jews that God was switching the gospel over to the gentiles. I will expand on this more later down the post.
1 Corinthians 1:22
“For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:”
The written word of God authenticated who Jesus was and by the Gospel. There was no need for the sign (miracle) gifts. The written word of God proclaimed the Messiahship of Jesus Christ that He was the Savior, and proclaimed God’s saving Gospel.
Do people still have the gift of healing?
If they do why they aren’t clearing out hospitals? Gods word and power never changes or weakens so why would the apostles be able to walk around healing people but charismatics /Pentecostals only “heal” those who come to church? I can tell ya why. Because the only healing that happens is by the healing power of God! Not through your own “gifts” that cease to exist.
THE GIFT OF TONGUES WAS THE HOLY SPIRIT PREACHING THROUGH YOU IN A LANGUAGE YOU HAD NOT KNOWN BEFORE AND THE PEOPLE HEARING IT IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. THE MIRACLE WAS THE HEARING OF THE GOSPEL IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. THE POINT OF THE APOSTLES PREACHING WAS TO PREACH THE GOSPEL SO THAT IT COULD BE UNDERSTOOD. CHARISMATICS SPEAKING IN TONGUES DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID NOR DOES ANYONE ELSE. SO THIS DOES NOT MATCH UP WITH SCRIPTURE!
SPEAKING IN TONGUES ONLY HAPPENED WHEN THE PEOPLE WERE PREACHING THE GOSPEL. BUT PEOPLE NOW DAYS THINK THEY CAN SPEAK IN TONGUES WHEN THEY ARENT PREACHING. IT JUST DOESNT MAKE SENSE AND HAS NO SCRIPTURAL BASE TO SUPORT IT. DONT GET SO EASLIY OFFENDED IF YOU ARE AND LET YOUR MIND BE OPEN TO THE TRUTH.
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”
There was only 3 times in the bible that speaking in tongues occurred. When it happened there was a sound as of a rushing mighty wind that filled the house where the people were gathered and there appeared visible cloven tongues as of fire and it set on them. We need to make sure the description of speaking in tongues when it occurred in the bible matches up with the definition of today. God never changes.
Malachi 3:6 “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them”
As of: used to indicate the time or date from which something starts.
Have you ever been to a church service where a mighty wind rushed through the church at the start of people apparently speaking in tongues? Like real wind just rush through the church and fill it? And don’t fool yourself either. I don’t doubt it has happened but I personally have never experienced it and don’t know anyone who has. Why would it be different now days? Why wouldn’t the bible tell us it would be different if it is different? Its not different. Only the definition of speaking in tongues to some denominations is different. The bible says ” a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind”.
“And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.”
Have you ever seen someone start speaking in tongues and this happen? I never have. We serve the same God the apostles did. Gods power hasn’t weakened or changed so why isn’t this happening in these churches today? Because its not the real deal.
“Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Verse 6 says they HEARD! They heard what the apostles were preaching in their own language even though the apostles spoke in their language to the people. Thats exactly what the bible says. Take it for how it is or twist it for how you want.
“7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?”
They were amazed because they heard the gospel being preached through a person they knew didn’t speak their language but yet they still heard it in their own tongue/language.
“8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?”
Again every man heard in their own tongue/language that they were born into.
SPEAKING IN TONGUES WAS A SIGN TO CONVINCE THE UNBELIEVING JEWS.
Unbelieving doesn’t mean the jew apostles didn’t believe in God. It meant they didn’t believe what God was telling them until they seen the sign!
1 Corinthians 14:22-23
“Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.”
“And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
They were astonished because they had not believed before that gentiles could receive salvation. Its common sense that they wouldn’t have been astonished if they believed that gentiles could receive the holy spirit before. God sending them this sign convinced them. Signs are for unbelieving Jews. God was telling them that gentiles could be saved and they weren’t believing it until they seen the gentiles filled with the Holy Ghost.
Just like how in Acts 10:14-17 Peter doesn’t believe God when He is told to eat the meat. He didn’t believe that the law had been lifted and that God had cleansed the meat.
“But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate”
1 Corinthians 14:23
“If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?”
We know without a doubt that from 1 Corinthians 14:22 tongues are a sign for the Jews that believe NOT. It was a sign and thats exactly what the bible says.
Who seeks after signs for belief and what is a sign in the bible???? Does everyone? NO!
SIGN: “A mark by which persons or things are distinguished and made known. In Scripture used generally of an address to the senses to attest the existence of supersensible and therefore divine power.”—http://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/sign/
“And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
JEWS SEEKING AFTER SIGNS
Jews speaking–“Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
“The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.”
In the time of Jacobs trouble/tribulation when God goes back to dealing with the nation of Israel/Jews the antichrist will do many signs and wonders. This unfortunately will deceive many Jews into accepting the antichrist as their messiah because they seek after signs.
2 Thessalonians 2:9
“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,”
“A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.”
2 Corinthians 12:11-12
11 I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.
12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
SO SIGNS ARE FOR JEWS NOT GENTILES ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE. TONGUES WERE A SIGN TO THE JEWS THAT GENTILES COULD RECEIVE SALVATION. BEFORE THEY WERE GIVEN THE SIGN JEWS WOULD NOT ASSOCIATE WITH GENTILES. THEY CONSIDERED THEM UNCLEAN. BUT GOD SHOWING THEM BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS A SIGN TO THEM THAT THE GOSPEL WAS FOR ANYONE WITH A HEART TO BELIEVE!
Paul speaking to gentile Cornelius in Acts 10:28
“And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.”
The gift of tongues is first used in the most transitional books of the bible. The transition of bringing the gospel to the gentiles since the Jews as a nation rejected Jesus as their messiah. Not to say Jews cant be saved now but the gospel was being expanded from Jews to gentiles. Jesus came to the Jews for them to except him as their messiah according to Matthew 15:24.
“But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
Jesus was a jew.
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
The gospel was to be preached to everyone.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Filled: become an overwhelming presence in…(that doesn’t mean uncontrollable blabbering.)
Campare 1 Corinthians 14:22-23 to Isaiah 28:9-13
9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13 But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
BY THE DEFINITION THAT CHARISMATICS USE TODAY (UNKNOWN LANGUAGE, ONLY GOD UNDERSTANDS…GIBBERISH USED ANYTIME THEY WANT) THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNIFICANCE, WORTH, OR GIFT IN THAT AND GOD DOES NOT APPRECIATE IT. IT IS MEANINGLESS.
1 Corinthians 14:32
“And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.”
The spirits were subject to the prophets. They had control over what they were doing and saying. Not like charismatic today that fall on the ground shaking and laughing uncontrollable. This is not biblical and cannot be supported by any bible verse. Don’t believe me then try finding a bible verse that says or indicates that laughing uncontrollably and shaking is proof of speaking in tongues. It cant be done without twisting scripture.
PAUL ADDRESSING AND CRITIQUING THE CHURCH OF CORINTH
1 Corinthians 14:6-9, 19, 27-28, 40
“Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
Lets read that again in capital letters…
“IF I COME UNTO YOU SPEAKING WITH TONGUES,WHAT SHALL I PROFIT YOU, EXCEPT I SHALL SPEAK TO YOU EITHER BY REVELATION, OR BY KNOWLEDGE, OR BY PROPHESYING, OR BY DOCTRINE?”
Speaking in tongues in most churches today is not speaking REVELATION, KNOWLEDGE, PROPHESYING OR DOCTRINE, therefore they are NOT speaking in tongues the way it was done in the bible and does NOT profit you anything by doing so. If you think this is wrong please enlighten me on why you believe the bible is wrong.
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise you, except you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for you shall speak into the air.
** “…EXCEPT YOU UTTER BY THE TONGUE WORDS EASY TO BE UNDERSTOOD” !!!
THIS DOES NOT FIT THE CHARISMATIC/PENTECOSTAL DEFINITION OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES BECAUSE NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND BLABBERING!
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
ITS BETTER TO SPEAK 5 WORDS OF UNDERSTANDING THEN 10 THOUSAND WORDS IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE. GOD LIKES FOR THINGS TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND DONE IN A DECENT ORDER.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
VERSE 27 SAYS THERE MUST BE AN INTERPRETER. WHY? BECAUSE GOD LIKES FOR THINGS TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND DONE IN A DECENT ORDER.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
IF NO INTERPRETER THEN KEEP SILENT.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order”
HOW DO ANY OF THESE SCRIPTURE FIT THE DEFINITION OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES GIVEN BY CHARISMATICS? THE GIBBERISH IS NOT UNDERSTOOD, THERE IS NO ORDER, AND THERE IS NO INTERPRETER.
1 Corinthians 14:15-16
“What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?”
1 Corinthians 14:33
“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”
Charasmatics/pentacostals will run to Romans 8:26 to justify their definition of speaking in tongues.
“26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
I have a real hard time seeing how this scripture relates to speaking in tongues or how it justifies blabbering. The verse is simply saying when we are at a loss of words and cannot pray that the Spirit prays for us. No where in the verse does it say the spirit completely takes over your tongue and causes you to shake uncontrollably. The verse does not even indicate that speaking in tongues is the topic so to try and relate that to speaking in tongues is twisting scripture to get it to fit your belief.
The only time in the 4 gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) speaking in tongues is mentioned is in Mark 16:17. Jesus predicts the gift of speaking in tongues that first happened in Acts.
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;”
With the context of Mark 16:17 its fair to say “tongues” meant language. So in Mark 16:17 its saying “they shall speak with new languages”.
They were new because the apostles had not spoken the languages of the tribes before but he would still be heard. If you are new to playing an instrument that means you had no prior knowledge of how to play the instrument. Same with in Mark 16:17. The languages were going to be new to the apostles because they hadn’t spoke in them before. With the power of God, the communication barrier didn’t matter. That was the whole point! To communicate the gospel to the different tribes that had different languages .
Also notice Mark 16:17 says “signs“.
We know from 1 Corinthians 14:22 thats tongues are for a sign for those that believe NOT.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
They began to speak in other tongues/languages.
“Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man HEARD them speak in his own language.”
They heard them speak in his own language. My language is english and if you are reading this then its yours too. Just because it is my language doesn’t mean english is my own personal language that I made up and no one understands it. Others use and understand english too. Remember language is communication you can write down. If you speak in tongues today by the definition of the charismatics then try writing down what ever you say. You cant write it down because blabbering is not organized words of a particular kind therefore its not a language.
“And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?”
The greek word “dialektos” means speech or language and “glossa” means tongue or language. Dialektos and glossa are used synonymously in Acts 2:6 and Acts 2:7-8 making it even more obvious that they were speaking in their own tongues/languages that they were born into!
Acts 2:9-11 gives where the languages are from!
“Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.”
VERSE 11 SAYS “we do HEAR them speak in our tongues/LANGUAGES”. The miracle was that they heard the gospel being preached in their own language. There is not one scriptural evidence to support the argument that speaking in tongues is an unknown language to everyone except God. Theres not one scriptural evidence to support the argument that speaking in tongues is random nosies that you cannot control.
“But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”
***They accepted him because they understood the message and seen the power of God. They would not have been able to accept it if they didn’t understand it. This is common sense.
Over the years there has been a lot of serious independent scientific research of this specific practice called speaking in tongues (by the definition charismatic go by). A good example is the long and detailed study carried out back in the early 1970’s by the famous Professor of Linguistics, William J Samarin. From all around the world he gathered and recorded many samples of “Speaking in Tongues”. All this data was then put through an extensive analysis over a period of five years. His conclusions were:
- While speaking in tongues does appear at first to resemble real language, that was only on the surface.
- The actual stream of speech was not organized and there was no existing relationship between units of speech and concepts.
- The speakers might believe it to be a real language, but it was totally meaningless.
There is no organized speech or existing relationship between units of speech and concepts with the charismatic movement today. Language and speech is organized unless you are drunk or under some other illegal substance. Tongues mean languages so how in the world do people think random gibberish fits the ticket? It doesn’t!
1 Corinthians 13:11
“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
2 Thessalonians 2:3
“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.”
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
BELIEVE IN JESUS AND THE GOSPEL AND YE SHALL BE SAVED!
1 John 5:13
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
