Once Saved Always Saved

Ephesians 1:13-14

13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

John 14:16-18-*notice ‘for ever’

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Now skip to verse 26 to see what the ‘Comforter’ is….

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Timothy’s testimony is a pattern….

1 Timothy 1:15-16

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”

Is the doctrine of “once saved always saved” biblical??

Saved-passing from death unto life…to have eternal life.

Always-something that never stops…which is also called everlasting.

We are sealed with the Holy Spirit ONCE we believe on Jesus.

So with a little different terminology (of words that mean the same thing) we can see how just the phrase “once saved always saved” is in fact biblical. I understand some might find this arbitrary (even though it’s not) so lets look into it more and what the bible teaches.

First lets establish what everlasting and eternal means

Everlasting: lasting or enduring through all time

Eternal:existing at all times : always true or valid

Its pretty clear that everlasting and eternal do not stop. In fact its the opposite of that. Everlasting by definition does not end. So why would we expect the gift of eternal life given by Jesus to ever end? We shouldn’t. People that believe you can lose your salvation believe you can loose something that’s eternal and given by God and this just doesn’t match up with scripture or definition.

John mentions “eternal life” 15 times. More than all the other books combined. John is the book written so that we might believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

John mentions “everlasting life” 8 times. More than all the other books combined.

John 20:31

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

“Eternal life” occurs 30 times in KJV

“Eternal salvation” occurs 2 times in KJV

“Eternal redemption” occurs 2 times in KJV

“Everlasting life” occurs 17 times in KJV

Hath-is present tense!….(has/have)–http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hath

John 6:47

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

If you believe the bible then you have to believe according to John 6:47 (and many more as we will see) that whoever believes on Jesus ‘has’ everlasting life. Has is present tense and everlasting doesn’t end.

1 John 5:13-14

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Do you know you have eternal life? For those that believe you can lose salvation at what point do you know you’ve lost your salvation? Whenever you stop going to church after a certain amount of times or when you tell a lie? The bible says salvation is a gift from God… 1 John 5:13-14 says you can know you have eternal life and that it’s by believing in Jesus. Just because we believe in Jesus doesn’t mean we don’t ever sin and that’s why the bible says Jesus blood covers ALL your sins. All is past, present and future.

1 John 1:7

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

How do you walk in the light? By believing in the Light and when you believe in the Light you become a child of the Light!

John 12:35-36

35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

  • We have boldness through the blood of Jesus….

Hebrews 10:19-21

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

  • Jesus died for the ‘sins’ of the whole world….

1 John 2:2

“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

1 John 1:9-unrighteousness is sin…

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.”

John 1:29

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

Jesus came to save the lost. I believe its save to say that we’re all lost until we get Jesus in our lives.

Luke 19:10

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

  • Jesus suffered once for our sins

1 Peter 3:18

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:”

John 6:37

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

Whosoever believeth in Him has everlasting life!

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Acts 16:31

“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”

  • Acts 16:31 doesn’t say to do a lot of good works, follow the law, attend a mass, or anything else of this nature to be saved. It says BELIEVE and thou shalt be saved.

Acts 13:39

“And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Galatians 2:16

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”

  • If no man is justified by the works of the law that means no man can be saved by the law! You are saved by faith and believing in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2:21

“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

Galatians 3:6-14

6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

  • Abraham believed and it was accounted unto righteousness! This has nothing to do with the works Abraham did.

7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

  • Paul is speaking to gentiles but says those that are of faith are the children of Abraham.

8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

  • Those which be of faith are blessed with Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

  • The just shall live by faith!

12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

  • The law is not of faith because it deals with works and you cant earn your salvation by doing anything. Jesus paid the ultimate price and all you have to do is have faith in what he did.

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

  • Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

  • Jesus doesn’t take back any promises.

So whats the law for?!

The true intent of the law is condemnation, and as a preparatory discipline.

Galatians 3:19-25

19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be  justified by faith.

  • The law was our schoolmaster. By faith we are justified.

25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Romans 3:19-20

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

  • The law brings us under conviction.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

Salvation is a free gift from God

Ephesians 2:8-9 says that you can’t save yourself. Believing comes from the heart not from what you do. Salvation is a gift from God to all who believe in him. When you give someone a gift out of the love in your heart you don’t take it back. Same with the gift of salvation. Jesus love is greater than our love so what makes you think he would take the gift of salvation away from you?

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

It’s by grace we are saved because we all deserve to go to hell! We’ve all sinned, we all come short of the glory of God and we all need saving. We are saved through faith and not of ourselves because nothing we do can cover all of our sins. Only the blood of Jesus can wash your sins away.

If salvation is of grace, it has to be an undeserved gift of God. Faith is presented as a gift from God in 2 Peter 1:1, Philippians 1:29, and Acts 3:16.

Acts 3:16

“And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.”

Mark 5:36

“As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.”

We’re justified ‘freely’ through Jesus…

Romans 3:24

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”

Romans 5:15-18

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

“Gift” is mentioned 5 times in this verse and 5 has symbolic meaning in the bible for victory over death! If you believe in Jesus then you have victory over death! See how 5 is symbolic for victory over death at—https://truthseekerssite.wordpress.com/2016/05/01/five-bible-numerics/

He that hears His word and believes on Jesus has everlasting life and he has passed from death unto life. Victory over death!

John 5:24

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

To be “In Christ” is to believe in him…

Romans 8:1

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Walking after the Spirit is done by having the Holy Spirit dwell inside you and the Holy Spirit dwells in you the moment you believe…

1 Corinthians 12:13

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

John 14:15-17-the Comforter is the Holy Spirit…

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Romans 8:9 says those who have not the Spirit of Christ are not of his….

Romans 8:9

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

If we aren’t under the law then we aren’t saved by the law. The law deals with works and what you do. The gospel teaches us to trust in what Jesus has done. Having the Holy Spirit inside of us produces the fruits of the spirit…

Galatians 5:22-25

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

Galatians 5:18-19

“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.”

Those in Christ by believing are made righteous, sanctified, and have redemption!

1 Corinthians 1:30-31

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

The gift of God is eternal life…

Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

John 10:27-29

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Romans 10:9-10

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

1 Peter 1:5

“Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

  • Believers are kept by the power of God, not by your own power!

Sons of God

John 3:7

“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”

We must be born again because our first birth (which is physical) is into sin and sin leads to death. We need a spiritual birth and the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us quickens our soul and spirit. When we become born again we are born into the body of Christ. Now how can someone be unborn? They can’t.

John 6:63

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Colossians 2:11

“In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:”

God gave us the power to become the sons of God…

John 1:12-13

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

We’ve received the Spirit of adoption….

Romans 8:15

“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

You wouldn’t deny your own child would you? Jesus wont either….

2 Timothy 2:13

“If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.”

  • Jesus cant deny himself because we are in Christ!

Galatians 3:26-29

26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

  • Do you cast away your own child for disobeying you? Neither does Jesus to his children.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

  • We are heirs according to the promise.

Galatians 4:5-7

5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

  • Believers are redeemed from the law and we have received adoption from God!

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

  • No more are we a servant but we are a son of God.

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Some believe 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 means one can loose their salvation because it says “unless ye have believed in vain”…

1 Corinthians 15:1-2

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you,12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”

But when we look down a few verses at 1st Corinthians 15:12-14 we see that the Apostle Paul is warning about unsaved religious people in the church in verses 1 and 2; not true believers in danger of losing their salvation. Paul warns that churchgoers at Corinth need to examine their faith (see 2nd Corinthians 13:5) because some were denying the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Obviously, such a person would not be saved. Many professed “Christians” today who deny the deity of Jesus Christ, the Godhead and the Virgin Birth. And many new age books that masquerade as the bible like the NIV, NLT, The message, and ect. deny the Godhead and the virgin birth.

1 Corinthians 15:12-14

12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

  • The bible speaks of those who will believe another gospel and they wont be saved…

2 Corinthians 11:4

“For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”

  • Those who put their faith in Jesus hold fast in confidence, firm till the end…

Hebrews 3:6

“But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.”

And again in Hebrews 3:14-15…

Hebrews 3:14-19

14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

The bible teaches over and over again that salvation is by believing in the gospel of Jesus. Those in unbelief have no salvation. It’s just that simple. If your truly saved then you will turn from sin, you will obey his commands and you will walk in the spirit which produces good fruit. Just because you sin doesn’t mean you’ve lost your salvation…it means you need to get back up again and turn from sin. As christians we’re at constant war with the flesh. Those who endure till the end are those who believe in the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 5:17-21

“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”

  • Our sprit is constantly at battle with our flesh.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Proverbs 24:16

“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.”

  • If you are just then you will rise up again even when you fall to sin. If you are justified then you’re saved.

 Romans 10:10

“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

  • Believing must come from the heart!

Philippians 1:20-notice “with all boldness, as ‘always’, so now also Christ shall be magnified ‘in my body’….

“According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.”

THE GOSPEL

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

BELIEVE IN JESUS AND THE GOSPEL

1 John 5:13

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
