The false doctrine which teaches “all sins are equal” is completely unbiblical and makes no sense whatsoever. This teaching is dangerous because it blurs the distinction the bible makes between greater and lesser sins. Many who are ignorant of Gods word on this topic are more likely to commit greater sins, just because they’ve heard all sin is equal from some false preacher. There’s more married couples thinking; since they’ve already lusted after another man or woman, they might as well commit adultery because it’s all equal anyways. People might think that since fornication is sin, and all their friends are doing it, that them becoming a homosexual is just as bad as their friends fornicating. Don’t get me wrong, Im by no means taking it easy on sin. Fornication, lying, stealing, sodomy, murder, gluttony, pride, laziness, all of it is bad! But you can’t conclude from there that all sin is equally as bad in the sight of God. The bible says all unrighteousness is sin and sin is the transgression of Gods law, but the bible NEVER says that all sin is equal.
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.-1 John 3:4
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.– 1 John 4:16-17
Notice in verse 16, the bible makes a distinction between committing a sin unto death and not committing a sin unto death. If all sin were equal then there wouldn’t be a distinction made between sinning unto death and a sin not unto death… they would be the same/equal.
Before I provide tons of evidence from the Bible proving that all sin is not equal, I want to clear up the only way that all sin can be considered equal. The only way “all sin is equal” can be true, is in the sense that all types of sin is sin. Although this should be common sense enough for there to be no confusion; the people who believe this doctrine of “all sin is equal” will often use this straw man argument to say that all types of sin are equally wicked. They use common sense to try justifing something that completely defies logic, common sense and the way human beings have carry out justice for thousands of years. Many who teach this “all sin is equal” garbage, will say “we as humans make a distinction between greater sins and lesser sins because it’s part of our sinful nature”. Out of the 448 times the word “sin” shows up in the Bible, you would think there would be at least one clear verse saying or teaching all sin is equal doctrine. To truly believe and teach that all sin is equally wicked in the sight of God, is illogical, unbiblical and border line insanity.
Heres why its border line insainity for someone to truly beleive that all sin is equal…Just for an example; Let’s say a 5-year-old girl steals a grape at the store. Stealing is a sin. Now let’s say some crazy man steals the little girl who stole the grape, rapes her then murders her. Believing God looks at the little girl stealing a grape equally as bad as the crazy man who kidnaped her, raped her and murdered her is something an insane psychopath would think. There is no balance or justice if all sin is equal.
A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.– Proverbs 11:1
- God hates a false balance
If all sin is equally wicked, then all sin would receive the same punishment. The balance is symbolic for justice. On one side of the scale is the sin committed or the crime and on the other side of the scale is the punishment. The greater the crime, the greater the punishment.
For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.-Lamentations 4:6
If all sin is equal then why does God in his perfect law put the death penalty on sodomy and adultery but not on stealing, getting drunk, lying or fornication?
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. – Leviticus 18:22
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.– Leviticus 20:13
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.- Jude 7
Exodus 22 deals a lot about the punishment for stealing and it consists of paying back double the amount stolen and restitution. Stealing has a lesser punishment than sodomy and murder because it’s a lesser sin. Sin is the transgression of Gods law.
22 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.
3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man’s field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.
6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man’s house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.- Exodus 22
A person found guilty of bearing false witness was to receive the punishment they thought to give the innocent.
16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.- Deuteronomy 19:16
A common objection some have is that Gods perfect law is in the Old Testament and they don’t stand anymore because we’re under “the age of grace”. First off, everyone who’s ever lived has lived under his grace because it’s by grace through faith that we are saved, not of works lest any man should boast!
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. –Ephesians 2:8-9
Abraham was justified by his faith just like we are today
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.- Romans 4:3-5
David was justified by his faith without works
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.- Romans 4:6-8
Justified: innocent, guiltless, right and just
Gods word stands as true today as it did in the Old Testament! His words are spirit and life and man doesn’t live by bread alone but by EVERY WORD that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord. Though the times and society change, God stay the same and ALL SCRIPTURE is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in RIGHTeousness.
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.- Deuteronomy 8:3
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.- Matthew 4:4
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto ALL good works.- 1 Timothy 3:16
For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed- Malachi 3:6
If all sin is equal then why does the bible clearly teach of GREATER sins. Great as in bigger sins, worst sins.
10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee HATH THE GREATER SIN.– John 19:10-11
Jesus told Pilat, the ones who delivered him (the Jews) have the greater sin.
Moses said that the children of Israel who worshipped the golden calf, had committed a great sin.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.– Exodus 32:20-22
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?– Genesis 39:9…13+13+13 = 39
- Notice great wickedness, and sin against God
Genesis 13:13 says that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were exceedingly sinful in the eyes of God.
But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly. – Genesis 13:13
Exceedingly: to a great extent, extremely, tremendously
13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.- Romans 7:13
If all sin is equal then why does the Bible teach that some will receive a greater damnation than others according to their WORKS?
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.- Matthew 23:14
Which devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.– Mark 12:40
Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.- Luke 20:47
- The bible says to Chorazin and Bethsaida that because of their works, it will be tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the time of judgement. If all sin is equal then why would God make a more tolerable judgement for some than for others?
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.– Matthew 11:21-22
If there’s a lowest hell, then there has to be a hell higher than the lowest or else the bible wouldn’t make any sense when it talks about the lowest hell.
For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.- Deuteronomy 32:22
For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.- Psalm 86:13
Why is there a lowest hell if all sin is equal? People go to hell because of their sins and for rejecting Jesus Christ. Hell is the eternal punishment for not accepting Jesus.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.- Revelation 20:11-13
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.- Revelation 21:8
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.- Romans 6:23
Willfully sinning Vs. Sinning out of ignorance
Someone who knows what they’re doing is sin and does it anyways, is worst than someone sinning out of ignorance, although they’re both guilty. The ignorant sinner still had to give a sin offering.
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:
3 If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the Lord for a sin offering.– Leviticus 4:2-3
And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty;– Leviticus 4:13
And again in Levitivus 5:17…
And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
Presumptuously: full of, characterized by, or showing presumption or readiness to presume in conduct or thought, as by saying or doing something without right or permission.
29 Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.
30 But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the Lord; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
31 Because he hath despised the word of the Lord, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.- Numbers 15:29-31
So the person who sins presumptuously, has a greater punishment than the person sinning out of ignorance.
12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. – Psalm 19:12-13
The bible associates presumptuous sins with the great transgression. Psalm 19:13 basically says “the great sin” because sin is the transgression of the law.
In Hebrews 10:25-29 the bible teaches about sinning willfully and its associated with a sorer punishment.
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
He who knew not is still worthy of stripes and notice the bible says ‘few stripes’.
If all sin is equal then why does the Bible say blaspheming the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness?
22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.
30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.- Mark 3:22-30
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.– Matthew 12:31-32
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
BELIEVE IN JESUS AND THE GOSPEL
1 John 5:13
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
