The First Electrician

Job 28:20-28

20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?

21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.

22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.

23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.

24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;

25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.

26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:

27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.

28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Much about thunder and lightning remains unknown to man however what is known is very interesting, especially in light of the Bible. This post will outline all the mentions of thunder and lightning and the orange words will help make the patterns more clear. The Bible teaches a consistent and foundational truth using thunder and lightning and this truth is taught and emphasized all throughout the Bible.

The FEAR of the all POWERful God, is the beginning of

Knowledge and Wisdom.

Proverbs 1:7

7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 3:7

7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

Proverbs 9:10

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

In Job 28, Job is speaking about wisdom and how there’s nothing to be compared in value  with her. The wisdom that is of God is given by God through his Word.

Proverbs 2:6

6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Psalm 12:6-8

6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

7 Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

Wisdom is more precious than any material possession because wisdom can get you any material possession you desire. Wisdom will more importantly give you what material things can’t provide. True happiness, good relationships, good health, right decisions and knowing how to react to the bad is all given by wisdom. Job keeps hammering this truth in just as the book of proverbs does and just about every other book of the Bible does. I can’t help but notice how in Job 28:26, Job said under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost that God made a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder. To make a decree is to make an order, so God made an order for the rain and he makes a way for the lightning of the thunder and says to man that the fear of the Lord is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Job 38:25-27

25 Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

Job 38:35-37

35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

What do we know about lightning as humans?

First we need to have a basic understanding of matter, molecules, and atoms. Matter (as we know it) has three phases; solid, liquid and gas. All three phases of matter contain tiny particles called molecules. Molecules are the fabric of matter and they’re constantly in motion. Within all substances, molecules are equal in structure and mass. While the molecules are in motion they exert force and the amount of force exerted determines the phase of matter. Molecules are small but they’re not as small as you get because molecules are made up of groups of atoms. At the core of an atom you have whats called the nucleus, and the nucleus contains protons and neutrons. Around the nucleus there’s a number of shells (depending on the matter) and within these shells there are electrons circulating the nucleus. Each shell can only contain a certain amount of electrons.

atom

Electrons have been called a negative charge and protons are said to be positive but really these terms are given to make a distinction between the two charges. Positive and negative charges attract just as the north and south end on a magnet attract. Just like how we as humans are naturally attracted to the opposite sex…and this excludes those who have been given over to a reprobate mind (Romans 1). The Bible says that sodomy is unnatural because nature its self teaches the truth that opposites attract. Keep this truth in mind and relate it to lightning. Within a cloud there’s tiny ice particles and these ice particles are constantly in motion and exerting force on each other. The more moisture in the air, the more ice particles in the clouds, which results to more force being exerted. This force creates an electric charge and the electric charge at the bottom of cloud creates mostly a negative charge.

Genesis 42:18

18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

Ecclesiastes 8:12-13

12 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:

13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

God programmed nature to find equilibrium and the lightning bolt we see I believe is an example of God balancing out nature. In the case of lightning, God is balancing the forces of protons and electrons from the ground (or what ever else creates a faster avenue for the electrons to flow), and the electrons in the clouds. As I previously stated, opposites attract and when there’s just enough electrons in the clouds and just enough protons on the ground, the electrons will find the fastest avenue to get to its attraction. Isn’t this true in other areas of life pertaining to opposites? For example, a good husband wants to get to his wife as fast as possible after a hard days work. Electricity takes the fastest avenue just as water does. Electricity flows through metal conductors such as copper and aluminum but lightning flows through air pockets. The rigid design lightning emits in the sky is a visualization of the weaker air pockets in the firmament. Electricity is interesting but thunder and lighting takes it to a level that man will never fully grasp.

Now that we’ve established the fact that lightning is basically just an electric charge dispensing to the ground (or between clouds); now we must ask the question, what is thunder? Thunder and lightning happen simultaneously just as the Bible uses them simultaneously. All lightning is extremely hot and thunder is cold air molecules pushing away from the heat of the electric charge. When you hear thunder you are literally hearing the air push away from the heat of the lightning. The reason we see the lightning before we hear the thunder is obviously because the speed of light travels faster than the speed of sound.

— Light travels about 186,000 miles per second.

— Sound travels about 1,096 feet per second.

The Electricians “raceways”

Electricity by definition is the movement of free electrons in a medium. Electricians 36449086_665597433776887_6968806212691296256_nbuild whats called a “raceway” for the wire to travel in safely. Electrons flow through the wires and are terminated in transformers and panels which then branches off the power to lights, appliances, machines, ect. Common raceways include EMT conduit, Rigid conduit, cable tray and wire mold. Linemen build and maintain power lines with 13,000 volts up to 765 kV lines using six conductors per phase in a bundle. The voltage is stepped down several times before it gets to your 120 volt outlets and switches. Your typical electrician will be around 120/240 volts and 277/480 volts everyday. As powerful and scary as these voltages seem to us humans, lightning bolts can have a potential difference anywhere from 100 million to 1 billion volts each strike. — http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electric/lightning2.html

The current of a lightning bolt….

— The typical lightning bolt can transfer 10^20 electrons in a fraction of a second.

26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:

27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.

28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Almost every time thunder and lightning is mentioned in the Bible there’s also mention of people being fearful, trembling and being discomfited. Relating this to electrical work, I’ve noticed that most people are just naturally afraid of electrical work and this is good. Right after I got the job I went through orientation in which they cover safety protocols A LOT. The instructor showed videos of electrical accidents to instill a healthy fear in us about the power of electricity. The first time the Bible mentions thunder and lightning is when Moses is on Mt. Sinai with God and the Bible says there was thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount. Notice that all the people in the camp were trembling…

Exodus 19:16

16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

The second time thunder and lightning is mentioned in the Bible is in the same context as the first and the Bible tells us that the people stood afar off.

Exodus 20:18

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

The first and second time “thunder and lightning” is mentioned in the Bible is at a very significant time in human history. On Mount Sinai, God carves the 10 commandments in stone and delivers them to Moses to establish the law of God. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that thunder and lightning is mentioned at this very significant time because the more we fear God the more we will follow his commandments. Observe how this pattern is consistent with the rest of the mentions of thunder and lightning.

The 3rd mention of thunder and lightning in the Bible is in 2 Samuel 22:15 and the context is David singing praise to God. David praises God for protecting him against his enemies and he says in verse 15 “he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.”

Discomfited: to feel uneasy, rattled, shaken, distressed

Many times when people in the Bible praise God they use creation to express how  powerful God is because the creation can never be greater than the creator. Verse 8 of 2 Samuel 22 says the earth shook and trembled and the heavens moved because God was wroth. Two verses later it says God bowed the heavens. Verse 16 says the channels of the sea appeared and the foundations of the world were discovered at the rebuking of the LORD.

Matthew 10:28

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

I believe the Bible uses thunder and lighting in the context of fearing God many times because thunder and lightning gives us a glimpse of how powerful God is and lightning puts the fear of God into anyone when it strikes close enough. Thunder is probably the closest comparison to Gods voice than anything else we as humans have heard. I’d venture to say that all men have heard thunder at some point of their life.

Psalm 19:1-2

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge

We see David praising God the same way in the book of Psalms as he did in 2 Samuel. It’s very fitting how the Bible uses thunder and lightning to describe Gods power because lightning literally is power and people are instinctively afraid of lightning and thunder when the storm gets crazy enough. Even without a crazy storm, just hearing thunder in the distance can send a chill up your back which is probably why it’s used a lot in scary movies.

Psalm 18:14

14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

Psalm 77:18

18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.

 Psalm 144:6

6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.

Job 37:3

3 He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

Psalm 135:7

7 He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.

Jeremiah 10:13

13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

Jeremiah 51:16

16 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

The appearance of Jesus is likened to Lightning

Matthew 24:27

7 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

The Bible teaches that when Jesus comes back in the clouds every eye shall see him because his countenance is so bright.

Matthew 28:3

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

Daniel 10:6

6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.

Jesus’s countenance is likened to lightning but Jesus also said that he beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

Luke 10:18

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

Did Jesus literally see Satan in a form of a lightning bolt fall from heaven? I don’t believe so. I believe that Jesus is saying just as lightning falls from heaven, so did he behold Satan fall. To be consistent with the Bibles view, I believe he is likening the fall of lightning to the fall of Satan because Satan was really bright in his appearance. Is he still bright in his appearance, I don’t know nor do I care because I know the Glory of God the Fathers face is so bright no man can look upon him and live.

Exodus 33:17-23

17 And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

Heavenly creatures called Cherbuims are likened to Lightning and notice how the element of heat, light and the emission of electric charge is present…

Ezekiel 1:13-14

13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.

They ran and returned as the appearance of lightning. This lines up with science and how the electrons in a lightning bolt flow or run through air pockets. Also notice how the Bible is likening the speed of lighting to the speed of these creatures.

— The speed of lightning is also related to in Nahum 2:4….

Nahum 2:4

4 The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.

Thunder and Lightning around Gods throne…

Revelation 4:5

5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Thunder and Lightning during Gods wrath….

Revelation 8:5

5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

Revelation 11:19

19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Revelation 16:18

18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

Zechariah 9:14

14 And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.
